The Meaning of Touch in Nursing


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find the meaning of touch in nursing.
Result of literature review were as follows, 1) touch as a nonverbal communication, 2) touch as a energy transmission in field, 3) touch as a part of integrality of caring, and 4) qualitative approach to "touch" concept. But that gives no understanding of "touch" concept in nursing, then researcher hoped to investigate the meaning of touch through interview observation and questionnaire in nursing phenomena.
Researcher applied interview program to 15 subject. But there are some limitation in interpretation of this result. Then follow-up study was done to know the meaning of touch for nurse and patient.
The result of this follow-up study as follows: Purpose of nurse¢¥s touch is to establish of her work (48.9 %), and to do emotional support or relieve pain (39.4 %) for patient, and 27.3 % of those subject is answered as they used to touch as a effective nursing intervention, and subject that difficult to apply touch is 20 - 40 aged male patient the reason is the sex based thought.
And 7 patient (male; 4, female; 3) was administered to interview also, important result is as follows: 1) Subject have no expectation to nurse about supportive nursing care, 2) Subject that have positive attitude to nurse¢¥s touch is 70 aged female patient, then this indicated that old aged patient have increased need for touch, 3) Touch that subject do not wanted is resulted to threatening or inversive effect to individual, and 4) The difference about perception of touch between Pre and Post admission of subject is identified to the result of Weiss¢¥s study and Remay¢¥s study.
As a result, this research indicated that meaning of touch to individual is various and touch is effective nursing intervention only when nurse used the touch. by understanding of individually and environmentally influential factor as well as involved individuality and integrality.
